The driveshaft is a cylindrical component, made of steel or aluminum, that links the transmission to the rear differential. It connects to the transmission via the CV joints. These joints transfer the torque from the transmission to the drive wheels at a constant speed. In front wheel drive vehicles, the CV joints are located on the front axles. They allow the axle to flex and change, absorbing the bounce of the wheels.
Over time, these components may need maintenance or replacement. There are several signs that can indicate when it's time for an inspection. For instance, if you hear clunking or clicking noises, it might mean that a CV joint replacement is needed. Similarly, vibrations during acceleration could signal a damaged driveshaft or an axle issue. Steering problems may also be a symptom of a driveshaft issue. If the grease leaks out of a damaged CV boot, the CV joints can deteriorate.
